OpenAl debuts GPT-4.1 with support for a million tokens and enhanced coding abilities

OpenAI has officially introduced its new GPT-4.1 series, which includes GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 Mini, and GPT-4.1 Nano—pushing the limits of performance, efficiency, and real-world application. These models deliver superior results compared to GPT-4.0 and GPT-4.5 by excelling in benchmarks such as SWE-bench Verified for coding, Scale’s MultiChallenge for following instructions, and Video-MME for long-context understanding.

A standout feature of GPT-4.1 is its support for a massive 1 million token context window. Beyond raw power, the series brings practical improvements like more precise instruction following, smarter code diffs, minimal unnecessary changes, and a significant reduction in both latency and cost. For instance, GPT-4.1 Mini not only beats GPT-4.0 on key benchmarks with half the latency but also cuts costs by 83%. Meanwhile, GPT-4.1 Nano is designed for tasks such as autocomplete and classification, offering exceptional speed and efficiency.

Feedback from early users such as Windsurf and Qodo highlights impressive gains, with benchmark scores increasing by up to 60% and a 50% reduction in extraneous code edits. These results underscore GPT-4.1’s readiness for production use, powering next-generation coding agents, processing extensive documents, and handling support tickets with ease.

In a major strategic move, OpenAI will discontinue GPT-4.5 in July 2025, urging developers to embrace the new, more cost-effective, and powerful GPT-4.1 models. The future of intelligent software development and agentic AI now looks brighter than ever.
