Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a conversation with Lex Fridman, emphasized India’s crucial role in the global artificial intelligence (AI) landscape. He asserted, “No matter what the world does with AI, it will remain incomplete without India,” highlighting the nation’s vast AI talent pool and its growing influence in cutting-edge technologies.
India has emerged as a key player in AI, with a workforce comprising engineers, researchers, and developers skilled in large-scale AI applications. The global tech industry is already shaped by Indian-origin leaders like Sundar Pichai, Satya Nadella, and Aravind Srinivas, reflecting the country’s deep-rooted contributions to AI innovation.
However, global AI dominance is not solely determined by talent. The US and China currently lead in AI infrastructure, computing power, and foundational model development. India’s strength, as Modi pointed out, lies in application-driven AI, particularly in governance, healthcare, finance, and enterprise adoption. Drawing parallels with India’s rapid 5G rollout, Modi suggested that AI could follow a similar path of swift adoption and integration.
The Indian government has already initiated efforts to democratize GPU access and invest in AI research and development. Yet, achieving large-scale AI leadership will require sustained investment, clear regulations, and enhanced computing infrastructure. While India possesses the talent and expertise, its ability to compete with AI giants like the US and China will depend on strategic execution and long-term innovation policies.
